10,000 Beekeepers
The remote, pristine forests of northwest Zambia are home to some of the most impoverished communities in Africa. Deforestation threatens the region's ecosystems, as cutting down and selling off natural forest resources, then selling or farming the cleared land, represents some of the only sources of income for the area's population.
As a more sustainable way to generate income while preserving the irreplaceable forest, a group of a dozen beekeepers producing African forest honey was formed. They raised wild African forest bees in traditional hives made from renewable forest resources like hollow logs and bark.
Within a few years, the number of beekeepers in the group was in the hundreds. Today, the company now known as 10,000 Beekeepers has created a sustainable income stream for tens of thousands of African families.
