Mukwano Women’s Group
The Mukwano Women’s Group in Bujagali Falls, Uganda is a creative co-operative promoting resiliency in an impoverished African community through the crafting and selling of beautifully quilted, vividly colourful handbags.
The co-op’s two villages, located at the headwaters of the Nile River, were once a white-water rafting tourist destination. The construction of two hydro dams eliminated the rafting rapids, and the customer base for the Mukano Women’s Group’s gorgeous bags – made on old treadle sewing machines – disappeared along with them.
The funds generated from the bag sales are redistributed by the co-op to its members. In a society where the average day’s pay for a labourer is $2.50, the after-cost proceeds generated by each bag sold go a long way towards food, medicine, school fees, and necessities for the children of these hardworking and talented women.
